Sustainable Shipping Initiative
As the only marine coating manufacturer, Jotun is a member of Sustainable Shipping Initiative (SSI). SSI brings together shipowners, operators and managers, banks and financial stakeholders, cargo owners, classification societies, non-profits, ports, and service providers to advance environmental, social, and socioeconomic goals for a sustainable shipping industry. SSI has a holistic overview of sustainability covering the whole Shipping industry: Oceans, Communities, People, Transparency, Finance and Energy.
ExploreClean Hull Initiative
Bellona and Jotun launched the Clean Hull Initiative (CHI) in 2021. CHI aims to develop and work towards implementation of an industry-wide recognized and accepted (ISO) standard for hull cleaning of biofouling in international shipping. This is done through collaboration with key stakeholders from the industry, public sector and civil society.

The Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller Center for Zero Carbon Shipping is an independent research and development center looking to accelerate the transition towards a net-zero future for the maritime industry. As a partner and “Mission Ambassador”, Jotun contributes to the collaboration towards the development and implementation of new technologies, alongside other stakeholders.
ExploreGlobal Industry Alliance for Marine Safety (a GloFouling Partnership Initiative)
Jotun is a member of The Global Industry Alliance (GIA) for Marine Biosafety. This alliance is an initiative of IMO’s GloFouling Partnerships, that brings together leaders from maritime, shipping, ocean energy, aquaculture and other ocean-based industries. The aim is to support IMO’s objective to protect marine biodiversity and decarbonize shipping, via improved biofouling management.
ExploreSea Zero
Jotun is one of 13 partners in the Sea Zero project. The project, initiated and organized by Hurtigruten Norway works towards enabling zero-emission passenger and freight transport along the Norwegian coast by 2030. A clean hull contributes to making the ships more energy efficient.
ExploreBallastwater & Environmental Manufacturers Association (BEMA)
Ballastwater & Environmental Manufacturers Association (BEMA) is an independent trade organization in the ballast water treatment and fouling prevention industry and provides coordinated, technical and non-commercial guidance. BEMA represents the industry in MEPC and in PPR (Pollution Prevention and Response) of IMO, and Jotun chairs the Biofouling committee in BEMA.
